What prompted you to make enquiries about improving your driving?
I was concerned about some aspects of my driving and wanted to check out the latest thinking and methods so as to improve my standard of driving and consequently become a safer and more confident driver. I was also nearing retirement and wanted to continue driving as long as possible.

What made you consider advanced driving?
I have always loved driving and knew there was some sort of help out there to assist people with improving their driving techniques but wasn’t sure where to find out. A policeman friend suggested I apply to the IAM. Before I did that my husband gave me one of the best Christmas presents ever – a voucher from the IAM entitling me to have a “Drivecheck” (Driving Assessment).

What was the next step?
I contacted the IAM and they sent me a list of the local groups. I rang the secretary of my local Sunderland group (SAM) and she put me in touch with one of their Assessors. How did you feel about the driving assessment? I was a little nervous but took a friend along for moral encouragement and enjoyed the drive. I was pleasantly surprised at the report from the assessor who encouraged me to enrol on the “Skill for Life” course in order to have some more outings with an observer to help me raise my standards further and then take the advanced driving test.

How long were you on the “Skill for Life” course before passing your advanced driving test?
It took me five months during which time I tried to perfect the different techniques in all aspects of driving including a thorough study of the Highway Code, Know Your Signs booklet and other resources available from the local group. Fortunately I passed first time. It is recommended to pass the test within one year.

What happened next?
I continued to go along to the monthly group meetings and have taken part in some exciting driving events like the Skid Car North East in Northumberland and the IAM Track Day at Teesside Aerodrome where I drove an Alfa Romeo with the biggest smile on my face. I’ve since taken the one and a half day Practical Caravanning course with the Caravan Club. Finally, to put a little back, I am now a committee member of SAM.

What are the benefits of being a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists?
A greater awareness of safety for all road users, pride, confidence and enjoyment in the skill of driving, cheaper insurance, discounts on lots of motoring-related purchases, the social aspects of local club membership, monthly newsletters, access to motoring information from the IAM website, opportunities to take part in driving events and continually improve driving skills.

What other interests do you have?
Golf, playing my trumpet (member of “2nd Wind” group at the Sage Gateshead), yoga, walking and caravanning, also a member of my parish council.
